"This picture was taken by Dorean Pope Photography.

The picture is of myself and my daughter Emma. I had this made for my grandfather. Emma is named after my grandmother who passed away. We were very close and I know this will mean a lot to my grandad to be able to look at this nightlight of me and the new Emma in his life. When I was a child my grandmother bought me a music box that played You Light Up My Life. I hope this lights his life up a little and he remembers how much he is loved each time he looks at the nightlight."

Jody wrote "The lamp was a gift from my son (in the photo) and my husband to me for Mother's Day this year (my third Mother's Day as a mom). In the picture is me (mommy) and my son who is now 2 years old. I have the lamp in my office at work...and many who see it are AMAZED at the technology and beauty. My son was just days old in this photo, and he was jaundiced, and so I had to sit in the front room in the sunlight with him for hours each day without his clothes on...and my husband captured this photo during one of our 'sunshine sessions'. The original photo was an horizontal one but since she ordered a 4x6 (only available in the vertical orientation) we cropped it to fit into our 4x6 vertical lamp.

A moment on the beach

This Night Light was ordered by Lena for her husband as a Father's day gift. She wrote "The picture is of my husband "Papa" and our grandson Nathan walking along the beach during a trip at the ocean. I'm sure there were some secrets being told to each other during that walk that will always be treasured."
Even though this isn't a typical Night Light photo (we always prefer close-ups) it was such a great moment captured that we wanted to share it. This year went by sooo fast and here we are entering October.
This is the month were the early Holiday gift shoppers start looking and buying. Why the extra fees?
The process of carving the pieces and creating the lights is time consuming. In order to be able to offer expediting of the orders, our stuff will need to work overtime. We want to make sure we give you the best product we can. Even when expediting we aren't going to "cut corners"!

What about shipping?
As you know, shipping time isn't included in the production turn around.

Carved piece in the frame

We have been asked about this issue before so I thought I should write something about it.
When placing the carved piece into the frame, as is with a regular photo print, the frame does cover the edges of the photo/carved piece. Our designers are aware of it and when they crop the images to fit into the frame they take this into consideration and do their best to make sure the image looks good even when covered around the edges.
In our linear frames the area covered is approximately 1/4" all around.
Below is a sample of how the cropped image is compared to how it looks in a 4"x4" personalized photo frame .

Ordering by mail and Print quality

As you may know we accept prints through the mail. We used to think that with prints we can control the quality better, but it isn't always the case.
Yes, when we scan we can control the parameters of the scanner and make sure we get the best scan possible but what if the actual print is low in quality? Well, in that case, there is really nothing we can do.

So, what is a good print and how do you get one?

The quality of prints highly depends on the printer and the paper.
* The old 1hr developing machines usually give good results.
* Photographers that make prints for you will usually use the highest quality labs.
* Online printing: quality varies. If it is defined as a lab you will probably get good quality printing.
* If you are printing it on your home printer it really depends on the quality of the printer and the paper. Make sure to use the best quality when printing and use high quality photo paper.

How to tell if your print isn't good quality:
* If the colors seem "patch"
* If you see lines going across
* if you see the printing "dots".

Combining several photos

Often we are asked if we can combine several photos to make one lamp. As a mother to two boys, I know that it is hard to find a picture where they both are smiling their faces clean and their eyes open ("How can they blink at the exact time the camera clicks?").

The answer to this questions is "it depends". We have done quite a few lamps made of combined images but it depends on the orientation of the images and the size of the final piece.

So, your best bet is to send the images to us and we will let you know how or if we can combine them.

This can be possible when you have narrow single images.

This type of combination is possible only in rare cases where the background isn't problematic.

4x6 lamp orientation limitation

The light affection 4x6 lamp is only available in the vertical orientation.
The limitation is purely because of technical limitations with the light
bulb size. A 4x6 horizontal lamp will have the light bulb sticking out and
that just doesn't look good.

Can we work with horizontal images?
In some cases it is possible to crop the image to be vertical. For example:

The photo

To be honest, choosing a photo for your Light Affection light is probably the hardest part of the whole process and, I am afraid, we can't do it for you.
I know it first hand (yes, even I never submit the picture way ahead of time, as I could / should). If I need to ask for the photo then how do I keep it a secret? If I need to find a photo in a stack how do I pick the best one? The only way I found is to add it to my Long TO-DO list and give it a date where I need to do it (maybe a date for finding the picture and a following date for placing the order).
If it is for someone I don't know well enough or can't find a picture I know they would cherish, I give a gift certificate kits. Yes, I agree, gift certificates aren't the same but you would be surprised how many of the gift certificates are actually redeemed and get great reviews.

Scanning photos for best result

The result of the Light Affection piece is directly related to the quality of the image you submit, so setting the scanning parameters correctly is extreamely important.
Different scanners come with different scanning software so it is hard to tell you exactly what to choose but, as an example, here are the parameters used for an hp scanner.

In this case we used the default settings except for:
1. Changing the Light tones to 0,0,0 so that the scanning software doesn't change the original one.
2. Change the sharpen to NONE
3. Change the resolution to 300dpi (that is the minimum.400dpi or even 600dpi will be better although it will create big files).

In general, try not to let the software change or optimize the image you are scanning.
To keep the file size down, make sure you scan only the area of the photo and not to full page. If you do scan the full page there is no harm done, but the file size will be much bigger.

Last, but not least. If you are saving the file as a jpg, save it at the highest quality (usually 12). Do NOT compress the file!
