The origin of Father's Day

Father's Day
The origin of Father's Day was a West Virginia church On July 5, 1908 sponsored the nation’s first event explicitly in honor of fathers, a sermon in memory of the men who had died in the Fairmont Coal Company mines, but it was a one-time commemoration and not an annual holiday.

In 1910 a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd tried to establish an official Father's Day. She went to local churches, store owners and government officials to drum up support for her idea, and was successful: Washington State celebrated the nation’s first statewide Father’s Day on July 19, 1910.

In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge urged state governments to observe Father’s Day.

Today Father's Day falls on the 3rd Sunday of June.  This year Father's Day will be June 16, 2012.

History of Mother's Day

Mom and Daughter

The history of Mothers Day dates back to the ancient annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to maternal goddesses Rhea, wife of Cronus and the mother of many deities of Greek mythology.

Ancient Romans celebrated a spring festival called Hilaria dedicated to the mother goddess Cybele.

Early Christians celebrated a Mother's Day festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent in honor of the Virgin Mary. In England the holiday was expanded to include all mothers. It was then called Mothering Sunday.
